Speech and Drama Teachers of Ireland is Ireland’s professional membership organisation for qualified and trainee teachers of Speech and Drama, supporting and representing our members around the country.

As a not-for-profit organisation, run by a voluntary board, founded in 1982, we were formed to encourage and promote the highest standards of teaching within the Speech and Drama field, to connect teachers of communication, performance and life skills and to act as a voice of the profession.

The organisation was formed to protect the professional interests of qualified, specialist teachers of Speech and Drama, to encourage the highest standards of teaching and to promote the study and knowledge of Speech and Dramatic Art in every form.

We provide our members with the opportunity to interact with like-minded professionals (individuals) from a teaching, theatre and business background; offer on-going professional development and aim to enhance presentation and performance skills in life, education, theatre, and the changing workplace. Through the years close links have been forged by all our members with the leading Examination Boards.

We provide support to teachers and students through events, materials with a forum to meet other teachers, to promote speech and drama activities in Ireland. This is done through our events and annual Drama Festival. Our annual Festival of Drama provides our members with a competitive platform to present the work they do with their students. This is a most enjoyable weekend with children from four to eighteen years of age taking part. The Festival has gone from strength to strength over the years and is a highlight in the organisations’ calendar.
